Charging around your tariff, not just your panels.
A smart charger can be scheduled to draw from the grid during a cheaper overnight window on a time-of-use tariff, on top of prioritising your own solar generation during the day. The two work together rather than being an either-or choice, which matters if you’re commuting into Southampton, Portsmouth or further afield and doing a fair amount of your charging overnight.
We’ll talk through whether your current tariff makes that worthwhile at survey stage, rather than assuming it automatically pays for itself. If you’ve already got solar and are thinking about adding a battery too, the same survey covers all three, since a hybrid inverter sized for battery and EV charging together is usually more cost-effective than adding each separately.
Do I need off-street parking?
Yes, for a standard wall-mounted charger you need a driveway or private parking space within cable reach of the unit. We confirm cable run and mounting position at survey.
Can I charge from solar panels I already have?
In many cases yes. A solar-aware charger can prioritise your own generation over grid power, though how much of your driving it covers depends on your panel size and when you’re usually charging.
What’s involved in the installation?
An electrician runs a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit to the charge point, usually completed within a day. We check your existing electrics can safely support the new circuit before quoting.
Can I get an EV charger without solar panels?
Yes, the two are entirely separate installs. Plenty of Hampshire customers fit a charger on its own and add solar later, or the other way round. We size and quote each independently, even if you end up doing both.
